Sample Making
Types of Garment Samples!
A garment sample is a physical representation of the design, construction, and quality of a finished product. It is used to check fit, form, and function before mass production begins.

There are several different types of garment samples, each with its own purpose in the development process. However, in this article, we will learn about the 6 major types of sample making!

So, without further ado, let’s get started!
1. Mock-up
A mock-up is an early version of the final product, typically created from paper or cardboard.

It allows designers to test proportions and get a feel for how the finished garment will look without incurring the cost of fabric or construction.
2. Digital Garment Sample
A digital garment sample is a three-dimensional (3D) model created using computer software such as CAD/CAM technology.
This type of sample can be manipulated to change colours, fabrics, and details quickly and easily, making it ideal for exploring multiple design options prior to commitment.
With traditional methods, like cutting pattern pieces out of muslin cloth, there was a lot of waste. With digital sample making, there is no waste!
3. Fit Sample
A fit sample is usually created once the basic silhouette has been finalized.
The goal here is to measure the dimensions of certain key areas like sleeve length, waistline circumference, etc. to ensure proper sizing and proportion before proceeding into full production mode.
To do this accurately, professional-grade mannequins or models are often used in addition to the traditional dress form!
4. Size Set Sample
A size set sample is a complete garment created in every size (during sample making) that will be offered for sale.
This allows designers and manufacturers to test not only the finished product's proportions but also how well it hangs on different body types and whether or not certain details (such as buttons or zippers) can withstand repeated use without breaking.
Creating a full size range also helps catch any potential issues with grading before they become expensive problems further down the line!
5. Pre-production Sample
Also known as a "first-off" or "prototype," this type of sample making involves using actual production materials and construction methods.
The goal here is to finalize all design details and make sure everything works perfectly before mass production begins. As such, pre-production samples are usually very similar—but not identical— to the finished product!
6. Shipment Sample
A shipment sample is an exact replica of what will be sent out to customers once an order has been placed.
In other words, this sample is both a quality control tool (to make sure that each garment meets all requirements before it is shipped) and a marketing tool (to show potential buyers what they can expect to get)!
The Bottom Line
If you're looking for a way to get your clothes in front of customers, garment samples are a great option. They can help you sell your designs and also make sure your products are as good as they look online.
Garment samples come in various forms, so it's important to make sure that what you're buying will work for your business. If you're not sure what type of garment sample is right for you, take this guide with you next time you go shopping!
